The Carnival Came to Town
Licking carnival returns for a weekend of fun
by Melissa Gilmour
Members of the community were elated at the news that Licking would host a carnival, something Licking residents haven’t had in many years. With the seemingly constant string of carnivals, fairs, and summer fun in the Mid-Missouri area, it was an excellent summer treat for Licking residents to share in the festivities.
This year was an ambitious one for the city of Licking, and they had high hopes of making the carnival a success. With the aid of the good folks at Bluff City Shows, the Licking carnival had a great turnout and residents enjoyed seeing neighbors and family members out having a great time locally. The carnival was small in scale, considering the limited amount of ground space at the park, but none the less it was a draw to the city’s youth. With several rides, games, and food there was something for everyone to enjoy. One such attraction was the ominous and addictive quarter game. Brave players inserted a quarter into an elongated shoot and aimed for an open space at the end of a pile of other quarters. Your goal was to use your quarter to displace the quarters in the front causing them to tumble out of the door in front of you. While the concept was simple it proved to be a more difficult task and made for some hilarious fun.
So here’s a note from the people of Licking to the carnival decision makers: Bring the carnival back next year! If you build it, we will come.
